I have a Bachelors and a Masters
Degree in Social Work. I am also a Certified Stepfamily
Counselor and Coach. For the past fifteen years I have
worked in a variety of residential, school, health and
community based settings with at-risk children, youth, women
and families, as a counselor, community developer/planner,
program coordinator and children/youth advocate. Along with
my husband Rick and our colleague Gary, we co-founded and
are now Co-Directors of The Step and Blended Family
Institute, in Ontario, Canada. We offer resources,
education and training, as well as counseling and coaching
services to individuals, families and other professionals.
I am a mother
of three boys and a stepmother to two girls. This has been
the greatest learning experience of all, in my preparation
to work with step and blended families. Because of my life
experiences, in combination with my training, I feel a
strong desire to assist other individuals struggling with
the unique challenges of living in a stepfamily. I have a
strong grasp of the issues and dynamics that are at work in
step and blended families and my insights are based on my
extensive training in this area as well as my experience
living in a blended family for 11 years. I take a holistic
and educational approach in my work with clients, providing
them with the information they need to understand what is
happening in the step situation, and the tools to address
their issues. I help them to assess their situations,
strengths and options in order to move forward. I combine
attentiveness, thoughtfulness and a sense of humor in my
work which enables me to make a strong connection with my
clients.
